Are Donation Requests on Online Platforms Just a Scam? The Truth Behind ‘Food India’ Donations by Book My Show and Zomato

In recent times, there has been a growing trend in companies like Book My Show and Zomato to ask for a small donation of 2 to 3 rupees to “Food India” while making purchases on their platforms. While many of us may think that such a small donation won’t make much of a difference to our wallets, we need to be aware of the potential for this to be a big scam.

Think about it — how many people use these platforms daily? How many people click the donation button without thinking twice about it? When we consider the sheer volume of users, the number of donations collected in a day or a month can quickly add up. The question is — are these companies actually donating this money to charity as they claim to be?

As it turns out, these companies are doing this to comply with the Indian Companies Act 2013, which states that if a company has a net profit of more than 5 crores, a turnover of more than 10,000 crores, or a net worth of more than 500 crores, they are compelled to donate money to either charity or the community.

While there is no concrete evidence to suggest that these companies are not donating the money collected to charity, we should be aware that this donation request is not just an act of goodwill. It is a legal obligation for these companies to donate a portion of their profits to charity, and the donation request is just a means to fulfill that obligation.

So, if you genuinely want to donate to charities, it is better to donate directly to them rather than through a third party or a company. By doing so, you can be sure that your money is going where it is intended, and you are making a real difference in someone’s life.

In conclusion, we need to be aware of these new trends in corporate social responsibility and not be fooled by superficial donation requests. Let us take the initiative to research the charities we want to donate to, and contribute directly to them. In this way, we can ensure that our donations are making a genuine difference to those in need.
