Hey MCK’s, Today we are going to talk about a cyber attack that happened in Ohio, a state that recently faced a data breach on the HCA health care on 11th July About which I have also announced If you haven’t read it You can read it from here, well today we are going to talk about another data breach that happened in the same Ohio state which allowed hackers to steal the SSNs of thousands of people if you don’t know what does SSN mean, It means Social Security Number Which is like Aadhar Card Number In United States. Let’s dive into the details.

In a recent unsettling event, the Ohio History Connection, an old-time historical group in Ohio, got hit by a nasty ransomware attack that spilled the beans on sensitive info about thousands of people. This society’s been around since way back in 1885, managing loads of cool spots and history museums around the state. They’re also the big shots responsible for the State Historic Preservation Office and the official state archives. So, what went down? Well, the Ohio History Connection came out and said that in early July, some cyber troublemakers busted into their data servers, locking up their info in a digital vault and demanding a mega-million-dollar ransom to keep it from going public. They even tried to cut a deal, but the hackers weren’t having any of it. The outcome? Certain folks’ private stuff might be out in the open now.

Turns out, these hackers swiped a bunch of data, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of folks who’ve been part of the organization from 2009 to 2023. How’d they get in? The Ohio History Connection suspects it might’ve been through a sneaky phishing email with a bad attachment. They’re not exactly sure, but it’s a solid hunch. The FBI and some tech experts jumped in to help clean up the mess. About 7,600 people got caught up in this mess, and the organization didn’t waste any time owning up to it. They sent out notifications to let the affected folks know what was up. Oh, and they’re tossing in a year of free credit monitoring to sweeten the deal.

Here’s the kicker: They held off on telling everyone for over a month. Why? Well, they needed to dig into the damage, figure out who was hit, and chat things out behind the scenes. Some folks might say that’s a long wait, but they had their reasons. In response to this digital disaster, the Ohio History Connection made a smart move. They’re shifting a bunch of their stuff to cloud-based systems. It’s like moving your stuff to a more secure storage space but in the digital world. This should help keep their data safer from future attacks. But hold on, this isn’t just their problem. Other Ohio-based groups connected to local governments have been stuck in similar jams. Ransomware attacks have been causing chaos for a bunch of them. It’s like these hackers have a thing against Ohio. There was the Cleveland housing deal, the oil company shakedown, and even a small town caught in the crossfire. It’s a wild digital world out there.

So, what’s the big lesson here? Staying safe online isn’t just for tech wizards. Everyone needs to keep their guard up, watch out for sketchy emails, and be ready to bounce back if things go sideways. The Ohio History Connection’s story is a reminder that in the digital age, being prepared is half the battle.
